Where to submit a marriage registration

A marriage registration can be submitted at the municipal office of the town/city that you reside in. 

SOFA status members can submit a marriage registration at the town/city in which their base is located. 

1. Documents required

A completed Marriage Registration form (婚姻届 kon'in todoke) in addition to the following:

*The Registration of Marriage form can be obtained from the city office. It must be completed in Japanese only with the exception of signatures. If you need assistance, please ask a private translation company to complete the form on your behalf. 

Japanese nationals

No additional documents are required.

U.S. nationals

  • Single Affidavit for Marriage (original + a Japanese translation)*
  • A passport OR a birth certificate + its Japanese translation

*For non-SOFA status members, please obtain the affidavit from the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Japan. For SOFA status members, please obtain the affidavit from the your base. 

Filipino nationals

  • Certificate of Legal Capacity to Contract Marriage issued by the Philippine Embassy in Japan (original + Japanese translation)
  • A passport OR a birth certificate + Japanese translation

Other nationalities

2. Regarding witnesses

Two witnesses over the age of 18 must provide their signature on the registration form. They do not have to be present for the registration procedure as long as they have provided their signature on the form. 

If your witnesses are non-Japanese nationals, you must provide a proof of their identity such as a passport or other types of ID. Copies are accepted.

3. Marriage certificate

You can apply for a marriage certificate after your documents are processed. The certificate is available in two sizes.

A4 size: 350 yen

Certificate size: 1,400 yen
